Ciego de Avila is symbolized in a Pineapple, the queen of the fruits. This is due to the extensive fields of pineapple found in this province. The city which was founded in 1840, has become important for the Cuban economy and was better known during the Ten Years World time in which the Spanish in view of the invasion the Cuban troops were carrying to the west of the island , built a railroad that cut the island into two precisely in the Ciego de Avila territory. The railroad ran from Jucaro to Moron and together with the railroad, then Spanish built a fortification system consisting in 30 small forts .There were 2 Km between each fort and they controlled the entrance to the city. Ciego de Avila and its economy relly on agriculture mainly the sugar cane. The city is impressive because of its neatness and order. Its colonial eclectic architecture is one of its treasures. The strong aboriginal vestige found here is present a lot of archeological discoveries and sites. To the north of this province Cayo Coco and Cayo Guillermo are found.
