Granma is a province with rich
historical traditions, the fascinating contrast
of its landscapes, a combination of sea, mountains
and fertile planes and itsl nature are the biggest
attractions which support the tourism development;
an extensive plane divided into two by the mountains
of La Sierra Maestra, irrigated by the long Cauto
River and covering 8,365 km2 of the southeast
portion of Cuba. Granma posesses the 48% of the
Cuban historic sites and was granted the National
Monument title.
Bayamo was the second villa founded by the Spanish
colonizers (1513); and was declared the capital
of the Republic in Arms, onlya few days after
the beginning on October 10th 1868 in La Demajagua
of the first indepences war or the 10 years war.
It was Carlos Manuel de Cespedes, the person
who began the first of the Cuban wars for independence.With
the menacing possibility of falling in the hands
of the spanish military forces, the Bayameses
(person born in Bayamo) decided to burn the city
on January 12 , 1869 to leave them only the ashes
of the brave villa.
Bayamo, the Capital of Granma is a place full
of History, where for the first time the Cuban
anthem was heard.The city is famous for the carriages
pulled by horses, which are the most popular transportation
means of the city that preserves in its historic
center the plaza the house of Cuban Nationality;
and the Parroquial Church of San Salvador de Bayamo,
which preserves with jealousy the only fresco
in any of the churches of the Island inspired
in a patriotic event, and where the Chapel of
Dolores (1740) remains open for visitors to see
its baroque altarpiece, one of the most beautiful
in the country. This city was granted the National
Monument title.
